The best designer office desks for your workspace

By Rachelle Dare on in Design

When we started thinking about designer office desks, our thoughts first went to one of our favourite design eras – Mid Century. Evolving from modernism, this era is filled with simple lines and elegant shapes. Whilst iconic this style isn’t to everyone’s taste – but we can still apply the idea that furniture can be more than functional, and where better to start than your desk?

Many of us sit for more than 8 hours a day at our desks. Traditionally this would have been in an office, now it could be in a co-working space or at home. No matter where you work, your desk should be comfortable and fit for purpose, but it can also look good too.

What features should my desk have?

The first thing to think about is how much space you have. Ideally you want enough room to work freely and leave the space uncluttered – tidy desk, tidy mind – or so they say. However if you don’t have a dedicated work office, don’t panic. There are lots of sizes available and even a small ‘work’ space is better than being at the kitchen table.

Secondly, what do you use your desk for? If you work in the creative industries you might need to factor in space for drawing or writing, or if you work digitally, several screens. If you use only a laptop and note pad then less desk space will be required. Working in a management role might mean your desk needs to double up as informal meeting space. Desks come in different shapes too to accommodate varying needs. Consider what will be both comfortable and practical.

Lastly, think about whether you need storage as part of your designer set up. Some desks come with in-built drawers or you could pick something separate that can be moved if needed. In the past your options might have been limited to a pedestal with pen tray and file holder, but no more! Make a list of what you have to put away and find something that fits. This could be drawers, shelves, a locker for security or a simple cubby to pop your bag into whilst you work.

With the above in mind, we’ve selected our top designer office desks for your perusal.

AbakEnvironments Desk – Herman Miller

The polished aluminium frame gives this desk a classic executive feel, but the leg shape and different top colours have a contemporary twist.

Pailo Desk – Senator

Available as single, back to back or bench desks, this is one of our favourites. Pailo offers a softer approach to the formal desk system by using natural materials and exploring new ways to introduce fabric.

There are various finishes available as well as distinctive storage options. We especially like the way the wire frame cable basket and caddy contrast with the solid ash leg.

AlfaUp Desk – Techo

Have you ever fancied a sit stand electric desk? If so, AlfaUp might be the one for you. A streamlined classic look and sturdy construction make this desk an excellent option for adding more movement to your day.

Quick to assemble with a quiet mechanism and plenty of finish options, AlfaUp offers maximum flexibility.

Crate Desk – Allermuir

The Crate free standing corner desk with in-built shelving is one of our favourites. Another desk designed with the home in mind, its contemporary style fits easily into a variety of spaces.

A durable powder coated steel frame gives the desk stability, whilst the unusual (and softer) colour combinations makes this desk a feature in and of itself. Not to mention the plant space it provides!
